Follow the Star – Advent Devotionals Introduction
Sky Watching
Glorious now behold Him arise,
King and God and sacrifice.
Alleluia, Alleluia;
Earth to the heavens replies.
Oh, star of wonder, star of night,
Star with royal beauty bright,
Westward leading, still proceeding,
Guide us to thy perfect Light.
Dawn Eggenberger
Advent beckons all who call themselves Christ Followers to come to the stable and there fall on our knees as the shepherds surely did, yielding our allegiance, our hearts, and will to the newborn King.
Advent comes from the Latin, advenit, meaning, “he comes, he is coming.” It is clear that this season brings with it a sense of excitement. And why not? It focuses on the coming of Jesus Christ, in history, in our lives, and in the future. The season is a blend of anticipation surrounding the coming of the Messiah as well as reflection on our lives in preparation for arrival of the Messiah. We are called to prepare, and to awaken to Christ’s presence.
This year, in order to help us discover more fully the meaning of Advent we have prepared this devotional, and the Advent home kit. In addition, each Sunday we will seek to understand the purpose of Incarnation. We will do that by considering words and titles used to describe Jesus.
Advent Week One: The royal titles
Advent Week Two: Savior
Advent Week Three: Emmanuel
Advent Week Four: Light of the world
Advent and Christmas are only the beginning of the story, not the end. The message of the season is meant to shape us all year long.
May your faith and understanding grow so that you might stand in awe of the Incarnation, and in turn incarnate the love of Christ that came to us in Jesus Christ.
Peace, Pastor Hoyt
